Medications - Supporting the Use of Medication in Social Care (CPD)
This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to support the safe and effective use of medication in social care settings. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the legislation that governs medication use, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and promoting best practices in care delivery. Participants will learn to identify common types of medication and their purposes, as well as understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in prescribing, dispensing, and supporting the use of medication.
The course covers the various routes by which medication can be administered, equipping participants with the practical skills to manage medication supplies in line with agreed protocols. Emphasis is placed on the importance of key principles, including obtaining consent, encouraging self-medication or active participation, maintaining dignity and privacy, and safeguarding confidentiality. These principles are integral to fostering a person-centered approach to care.
Participants will also gain the skills to access and interpret information about an individual’s medication needs. The course includes guidance on accurately recording medication usage and monitoring any associated changes in individuals, ensuring a high standard of care and safety.

Course Contents
Supporting the Use of Medication in Social Care
1. Identify legislation that governs the use of medication in social care settings.
2. Identify common types of medication.
3. Describe the roles and responsibilities of those involved in prescribing, dispensing, and supporting use of medication.
4. Describe the routes by which medication can be administered.
5. Demonstrate how to receive supplies of medication in line with agreed ways of working.
6. Explain the importance of the following principles in the use of medication:
a. Consent.
b. Self-medication or active participation.
c. Dignity and privacy.
d. Confidentiality.
7. Demonstrate how to access information about an individual’s medication.
8. Demonstrate how to record use of medication and any changes in an individual associated with it.
9. Competency framework and assessment

Assessment
The instructor conducts ongoing summative practical assessments and competency assessment . Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Medications - Supporting the Use of Medication in Social Care (CPD) Award. No external assessors are required for this qualification.
Duration
The course requires a minimum of 3 hours, and can be combined with other CPD courses and competency assessments.

Certification Validity
This qualification is valid for 12-months. To renew it, learners must complete the course again. It is also recommended that learners attend regular CPD.
